God's Trombones

November 3, 2018   Time: 4:00 PM
Location: Eau Claire High School Auditorium

Beloved,

The Gethsemane Missionary Association is proud to invite you to be a part of a cultural clas- sic - a soul stirring, thought provoking, musical celebration of art, history, and theater.

James Weldon JohnsonGod's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse, is a 1927 book of poems patterned after African-American preaching tradition. In it, Johnson honors the cre- ative, spiritual and political legacy of the black church and its sermonic traditions.

The book is comprised of seven poems:

  • "Listen, Lord — A Prayer" – an invocation

  • "The Creation" – A narrative retelling of the creation of human as told in the Bible. Instead of being a distant force, the Creator character is filled with personality and speaks in familiar language.

  • "The Prodigal Son" – from the biblical parable of the prodigal son

  • "Go Down Death — A Funeral Sermon" – in which Jesus is depicted as sending his servant, Death, to bring to heaven a weary woman who is old and ready to die, so that she can rest

  • "Noah Built the Ark" – retelling the biblical stories of Adam and Eve, a story of how sin entered the world, and of Noah and the Great Flood sent to cleanse the earth

  • "The Crucifixion" – telling the story of Jesus' crucifixion

  • "Let My People Go" – telling the biblical story of Moses and his work freeing the Hebrew slaves from Egypt, which has often been the basis of comparisons to the African-American slavery experience in the United States

  • "The Judgment Day" – the prophetic story of the Apocalypse

Our own, Rev. Dr. Carl R. Wells (Second Calvary) will bring the book to life with his interpre- tation of this cultural classic, setting the book to music and thru the use of oratory expres- sion, blending the talents of local actors, dancers and choirs.

It promises to be an experience that might best be described as a baptism in glorious sound!!

We ask that each church support our efforts and commit to the purchase of at least 10 to 20 tickets. Tickets can be purchased during the Annual Session at Second Calvary or thru the GMBA website or by calling the secretary at 803-254-4170.
