Columbia High School STEM Initiative Off To a Running Start

Columbia, SC, May 28, 2008 – Columbia High School senior Charles Zachary Christie has been named a Pre-Engineering Scholar by the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME). Along with this award, Charles received a $1,500 scholarship that he will use toward his study of Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Carolina in which he will enroll this fall.
The mission of Columbia High School is to provide meaningful innovative academic engagement, a challenging educational experience for all students. To that end, CHS has created an academy structure that is focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The school has National Academy Foundation-sanctioned academies of Finance, Information Technology, and Engineering in place as well as in-house academies of Biomedical/Health Science and Mathematics.
“Our academy structure is sound and based on nationally recognized curricula,” states CHS Principal Dr. Sean Alford. “Students like Charles exemplify the success that these academies can help create for motivated students in chosen areas of study.”
Since 1974, NACME has provided leadership and support for the national effort to increase the representation of successful African American, American Indian and Latino women and men in engineering and technology, math- and science-based careers.
