Worship Ministry

Board of Deacons

The Board of Deacons is a ministry of worship and service. It is established to partner with the Pastor to minister to the members of our congregation and community. It serves as an under-shepherd to care for the well-being of the congregation. This is accomplished by visiting and praying with the sick and shut-in and comforting those in mourning. The Board administers the Urgent Needs Fund to those in financial need and it delivers food those in need. The Board, jointly with the Pastor, conducts the new members' orientation class and coordinates the Baptism Service. The Board also maintains contact with members on individual Family Ministry Units. It prepares and serves Holy Communion every 1st Sunday and it is responsible for preserving the spiritual fellowship of the church.

Board of Trustees

The primary duties of the Board of Trustees is to serve as faithful stewards of the church's finances and watchman of all church assets. The Board has the duty to act as a watchman to ensure financial integrity of the church to ensure that members will have confidence in the collection, computation and management of their donations, tithes and offerings. This responsibility also includes review of all church accounts, on at least a monthly basis. The Board is responsible for setting policies for the operation of the church facility, employment, procurement, contracting, safety, insurance, fund raising, capital projects, investment and the endowment fund. The Board works in cooperation with the Pastor and the business manager who has the direct responsibility for the daily financial operations of the church.

Board of Deaconess

The Deaconess Board is composed of SJBC Women who are the spouse of current Deacons, deceased Deacons and mission-minded women who are selected by the Board of Deacons. These persons perform an invaluable service to the Deacon Board and the church. They assist in the preparation of Holy Communion, Baptism and other worship activities of the church. Each member of the Deaconess Board is valued and needed.

Junior Deaconess

The Junior Deaconess of SJBC is a group that has committed themselves individually and collectively to serve the Lord in a spiritual leadership role in the church. They are trained on matters related to church leadership and church spirituality. Their service and training will eventually lead them to become Deacons.

The Department of Music

The Department of Music has six different and unique opportunities for members to share their vocal, instrumental and dance talents. The four vocal groups are listed first followed by the Instrumental and. Each choir and supporting musician is committed to produce excellence in music and worship. This unified ministry is focused on promoting the Kingdom of God through worship. Because of the diversity of various styles of music which they produce, SJBC is able to render all of the music of the churches tradition; which includes anthems, hymns, arranged spirituals, traditional and contemporary gospel music. SJBC believes in Apostle Paul's mandate: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you… as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God." (Colossians 3:16)

The Senior Choir

The Senior Choir is a service auxiliary of the church which emphasizes harmony of the spirit and unity of effort. It helps to implement the purpose of the church by furnishing worshipful music on Sunday mornings and special services and by maintaining home missionary projects in the church and community

The Gospel / Jubilee Choir

The Gospel/Jubilee Choir reminds you of back years ago when forefathers sang without music. The only sounds that were made were by stomping of feet and clapping of hands. Words were made up as the workers worked and sang in the fields. Today, we are a group of adults that takes you back to your roots by singing without music and offering a high time of praise.

Youth Choir

Vocal training is an essential building block to developing choral singing. Proper training at an early stage can be critical in preserving the voice and developing good techniques. The Youth Choir is an excellent training venue for future singers at Saint John. Its purpose is to teach young people how to minister to others through song and to apply the works of the ministry to their daily lives. The Youth Choir visits other churches and the nursing homes to minister to those who are confined.

Senior Ushers

The Ushers play a critical role in making members and especially guest feel welcomed and comfortable as they enter to worship God. Psalms 84:10 provides that, "A day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of the wickedness." The Senior Ushers is a team of individuals having a strong desire to do God's work. They greet worshippers, escort members and guests to their seats, distribute materials related to the worship service, receive offerings, and other services related to the orderly functions of worship. They also assist other ministries and members by serving as ushers for afternoon services, anniversaries and funerals. Interested persons are required to complete a course of training that will enable them to be gateway ambassadors for Christ and SJBC.

Hospitality Committee

The Greeters are a special group of adults and youth that are responsible for greeting visitors during Sunday worship services. This special group shows "doorway" friendship skills to ensure that guests feel welcomed as they worship God. They greet visitors as they enter the sanctuary and they also present visitors with special material during the morning fellowship time.
